Maybe instead of being a dick you try...not that...you might find that engaging in others thoughts yields surprising revelation. I.e. A person isn't dumb or crazy because you dont agree with them...or possibly there is a lot two people could share in core beliefs that are only a communications disconnect away.

I remember once at a party an ostensibly openly gay guy was talking about how his straight friends weren’t served “nicely” at a particular gay bar and this was wrong, and he made some sort of inane comparison about his straight friends feeling out of place to racism. It was one of the most awkward analogies I’ve ever witnessed.

I felt obliged to point out that straight people can walk into most any bar on the planet and hang out with a bunch of other straight people, be served by other straight people, and comfortably assume everybody around them is straight, and everybody in the crowd is ok with them being straight. But if you’re gay - you can’t really do that - so that’s why gay bars exist, and I sympathize with people who would rather not have a bunch of random straight people come in just for the novelty of being around gay people at a bar. To me personally I don’t really care who goes into what bar, but I also understand what’s going on here in terms of majority/minority social dynamics. People who are part of a majority are often completely clueless (and I guess sometimes so are people who are part of a minority).

Many straight people don’t understand gay pride because they take their position in society as a part of a majority for granted. They lack the perspective to understand it.

As right as you are about this, trying to convince anybody of anything, especially politics and religion, on facebook is pointless. All they are going to do is get haughty and stonewall anything you say. I learned long ago the best thing to do is just hide or unsubscribe from their bullshit and move on.

Here’s the rub; and your argument with your buddy was tl;dr.

When straight people hold hands and kiss in public it’s a PDA and people may giggle about it, but it’s largely accepted.

When gay people hold hands and kiss in public people throw a sh*tfit. Over the past 10-20 years the quantity and intensity of the sh*tfit has decreased significantly.

When a straight person/couple wants to adopt or foster a child it’s no big deal. When a gay person or couple want to adopt or foster a child there are laws and rules preventing them from providing a loving home.

These disparities are what has caused the LGBTQI pride movement, so those who are labelled a bit differently or don’t conform to “norms” are treated equally.

I get what you were trying to say, but the way you said it overshadowed the message.

Please think about how you say things before you say them.

And know there are LGBT religious Opponauts, like me.

This is not a black and white issue. There are many shades of gray. Just as you cannot change someone’s sexuality, you cannot likewise change the beliefs of a religion. I was lucky that I was raised mainline Protestant and hadn’t needed to go through the major hurt of deciding what to do about my faith. Other LGBT people are not so lucky.

As hard as it can be sometimes, I recommend you try not to lump all religious people together. There’s lots of knob-ends out there, for sure, but lots of great, supportive people too. My hyper-catholic aunt sent my husband and I a big box of chocolates and a really nice card when we got married. Most of my relatives are religious too and not one has rejected me ever. I’m thankful for that.
